The Complete Guide to the 5e Warlock & Eldritch Blast
In Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, the Warlock stands apart from every other spellcaster in the multiverse. While Wizards spend decades transcribing spell scrolls and Sorcerers manifest innate magical bloodlines, a Warlock strikes a pact with an otherworldly patron—an Archfey, a Fiend, a Great Old One, or a Celestial—gaining access to rare occult secrets and the deadliest ranged cantrip in the game: Eldritch Blast.
Why Eldritch Blast Dominates 5e Combat
Most damage cantrips in 5e (such as Fire Bolt or Toll the Dead) scale by increasing the number of damage dice rolled in a single projectile (e.g. 1d10 at level 1, 2d10 at level 5, 3d10 at level 11).
Eldritch Blast is fundamentally different: it scales by firing multiple separate beams (1 beam at level 1, 2 beams at level 5, 3 beams at level 11, and 4 beams at level 17). This grants three massive mechanical advantages:
- Flat Modifier Stacking via Agonizing Blast: When you take the Agonizing Blast invocation, you add your Charisma modifier to every single beam that hits. At Level 17 with 20 Charisma, 4 hitting beams deal \(4d10 + 20\text{ damage}\)—the exact equivalent of a 20th-level Fighter making 4 heavy crossbow attacks!
- Damage Type Superiority: Eldritch Blast deals Force Damage. Across the entire 5e Monster Manual, virtually nothing has resistance or immunity to Force damage (unlike Fire or Poison, which are resisted by hundreds of monsters).
- Multi-Target Flexibility: You can direct all beams at a single boss monster, or split your beams across multiple goblins or minions across a 120-foot (or 300-foot) radius.
The 'Cheese-Grater' Forced Movement Combo
Because the Repelling Blast invocation pushes an enemy 10 feet back with no saving throw and no size restriction on every hit, Warlocks excel at battlefield displacement.
When paired with persistent environmental hazard spells, this creates devastating tactical synergies:
- Spike Growth + Repelling Blast: An allied Druid casts Spike Growth (which deals 2d4 piercing damage for every 5 feet an enemy travels across the spikes). A 5th-level Warlock hitting twice with Repelling Blast pushes the monster 20 feet across the thorns, dealing an extra \(8d4\text{ damage}\) with zero saving throws!
- Cliff and Hazard Ejection: Hitting a high-CR monster with 3 or 4 beams pushes it 30 to 40 feet straight backward—instantly tossing enemies off ramparts, bridges, or into lava chasms.
Understanding Pact Magic vs. Regular Spellcasting
Unlike traditional spellcasters who regain slots on a Long Rest (8 hours), Warlocks rely on Pact Magic:
- You possess very few spell slots (typically 2 slots for most of your career, reaching 3 at level 11).
- All your spell slots are automatically cast at your maximum Pact Slot level (up to 5th level).
- Your slots refresh on a Short Rest (1 hour). In a campaign that runs the recommended 2 to 3 short rests per adventuring day, a Warlock actually casts 6 to 8 max-level spells per day!
